Children transfer to secondary school at the end of year 6, when they are 11+.  If there are more requests for places than places available, Norfolk County Council will admit children in the following order of priority:

  1. children with a statement of special educational needs naming the school
  2. children in public care who are due to transfer
  3. children who are due to transfer and live in the area served by the school
  4. children who are due to transfer and live outside the area served by the school who have an older brother or sister attending the school at the time of admission (but not the sixth form)
  5. children who are due to transfer and live outside the area served by the school but are attending a feeder school (Castle Acre CEVC Primary, Marham C Junior, Narborough CEVC Primary, Necton VC Primary, North Pickenham St. Andrew's CE Primary, Sporle CE Primary and Swaffham CEVC Junior) at the opening date of the admission round
  6. children who are due to transfer and live outside the area served by the school

If all children within any of the above rules cannot be offered a place, the highest priority will be given to children living nearest to the school within that rule.  To determine who lives nearest, distance will be measured on a straight line 'crow fly' basis, using Ordnance Survey data.  If following the application of admission rules and distance two applicants cannot be separated for a final place at a school Norfolk County Council will use random allocation to determine the priority for the remaining place

In-Year Admissions (other than at the normal point of entry)

From 1 September 2010 all applications must be sent to Norfolk County Council.  All parents must fill in Secondary In Year Application Form.  A copy of this form is available by clicking here.  The form should be returned to the Admissions Team (address detailed above).

If you have moved to Norfolk and/or have moved a distance which makes travel to the current school unreasonable:

  • Your application will be considered within 15 school days.
  • NCC will write to you to tell you at which school you are offered a place.
  • The school may require you to visit before you child starts at the school.

If your child is already at a Norfolk school and wishes to change schools:

  • NCC expect any change of school to take place at the beginning of term each school term (providing a place is available).
  • Applications for a change of school during the school year are considered after each half term holiday. You will be told the outcome of your application before the end of the term. NCC will only consider applications which are received at admissions office (above) before:
    • 31 October for a transfer to take place at the beginning of the spring term (after Christmas)
    • 28 (29) February for a transfer to take place at the beginning of the summer term (after Easter)
    • 31 May for a transfer to take place at the beginning of the autumn term (the beginning of a new School year)

Applications received after the specified date will not be considered until the end of the following term.

  • There may be exceptional reasons why you would want your application to be considered immediately. If so you should give your reasons on your application form and provide evidence in writing. We will contact your child’s current school to ask whether the school supports an immediate transfer. In this situation we will deal with the application within 15 school days.

If the Admissions Team are unable to offer a place at a family’s preferred school, the family will be offered the right to appeal to an independent appeals panel.  If you want to appeal you will need to contact the Admissions Team for more information.

Families are more than welcome to visit Swaffham Hamond’s High School before their child starts here.  Please contact the school in 01760 721480 if you wish to do this.
