Governor Vacancies at Swaffham Hamond’s High School Being a governor can be very enjoyable and worthwhile. Why be a governor? Most governors are motivated by the satisfaction of knowing they are helping schools to improve the standard of education. The friendship and spirit that develops within the governing body is often a big source of satisfaction. Schools are fascinating places. The training courses and other support that is available for governors help to build personal skills and boost self-confidence. Working with the head, chairing meetings, recruiting staff, managing the budget and monitoring the quality of education that the school provides can be enriching experiences that can be useful in many other areas of life. And of course by developing your skills, you will be better placed to play a full and active role as a governor. What will being a governor involve? As well as supporting the school, governors need to ask challenging questions to be sure that the school is providing the best possible education. This role is often called ‘being a critical friend’. One of the most important activities you will undertake is a visit to the school. This allows you to learn about the school, to see the school at work and to get to know the staff and the children. Planning these visits in advance with fellow governors and the Headteacher is essential. Governors are not expected to take detailed decisions about the day-to-day running of the school. It is important for governors to realise they are representatives and not delegates. Governors listen to concerns and views and then make decisions based on what is in the students’ best interests. The governing body has a collective responsibility for the decisions it takes.
