School Uniform Print

The aim is to set standards of dress which are practical and suitable for the working environment of the school. Swaffham Hamond’s school uniform is modern, smart and practical.

At Swaffham Hamond’s High School, we wish to maintain high standards, including those referring to clothing and appearance. The code of dress emphasizes smart and sensible appearance, appropriate to a school. Adherence to our Formal Dress Code is expected and the support of all parents is much appreciated.

Trousers should be full length, skirts should be of a practical length for the working environment; either extremes of length are not suitable. Shoes should have low heels (maximum 5 cm, recommended 3 cm), no steel capped/studded footwear, platforms or boots above the ankle.

Pupils with pierced ears may wear one plain stud in each ear; facial or body-piercing is not allowed for reasons of safety.

Health and Safety requirements mean no jewellery may be worn in technology or physical education lessons. For security and hygiene reasons staff are not permitted to look after these items during lessons; pupils should therefore leave these items at home on the days when they have these lessons. The school cannot accept responsibility for items of value lost under such circumstances.

We are sure that you will support us in insisting on the highest standards of smartness, cleanliness and pride in personal appearance. We expect our students to attend school wearing the correct dress and we reserve the right to send home those who do not. If there is an emergency or problem with dress, we would ask you to send a note of explanation to the Form Tutor in the Student Planner.

Students are required to have a shower after each P.E. lesson. They should only use non-aerosol deodorants.

School uniform is one of  the subjects for review during 2008/09, ready for possible re-launch in September 2009. Students, parents, staff and governors will be involved in the consultation.

Any changes will be publicised well in advance of September 2009 so that parents have adequate time for ordering and purchasing.

Jewellery Policy

School is not an appropriate place to wear an excessive amount of jewellery. The following items are permitted, but must (for health and safety reasons) be removed during PE lessons and all practical lessons.

A watch
A ring
A plain bracelet
A necklace (chain and small pendant)
A small stud earring in each ear (no hooped or drop earrings)
No facial piercings are permitted

If other items or inappropriate jewellery is worn, students will be asked to remove them and they will be confiscated until the end of the school day.
If a student continues to abuse this policy, the items will not be returned until the end of the half term.

During PE lessons, students are advised to put items of value in the “valuables box” for safe keeping.

Mobile Telephones
Mobile phones are not banned from school but must be switched off during the school day and kept out of sight in the student’s bag. Any phone seen by staff will be confiscated and the student’s parents/guardians will be asked to collect it.
